COIMBATORE, MAY 19. The Kovai Coutrallam falls which has been given a facelift at a cost of Rs. 16 lakhs would be thrown open to the public on May 21, the District Forest Officer, P. Durairasu, said today. Talking to The Hindu , the DFO said that during the last 45 days the department had carried out works for improving facilities at the falls. It was closed after a girl was trampled to death by a wild elephant in March. The department has chiselled the rocks to regulate the flow of water so as to ensure that visitors get a comfortable shower at the falls. A trekking shed had been renovated as a rest room. Separate toilets and changing rooms for men, women and children have been constructed. A small pool has been carved in the rock bed to give the children a safe play area in the falls. The Department expedited the renovation works so as to enable the people in and around Coimbatore enjoy the facility for the remaining summer holidays, Mr. Durairasu added. The recent rain has increased the flow of water in the falls. Iron suspension pillar-less foot-over bridges have been put up. One such bridge has been provided on top to help visitors cross the rock from one falls to the other. Similarly one more bridge was put up at a lower level for the benefit of aged people. Tribal plot watchers are being deployed in the area to monitor the movement of wild elephants.Visitors could enter the falls only between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
