PMK assures support to Manmohan Singh

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, MAY 20. The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) founder, S. Ramadoss, today assured his party's full support and cooperation to the United Progress Alliance (UPA) Government to be led by the Congress leader and former Union Finance Minister, Manmohan Singh.

In a statement here, Dr. Ramadoss said since other fraternal parties also announced that they would back the new Government in the overall interest of the nation, there was no doubt that the Government would have necessary resilience and stability to complete its full five-year term.

Though the people, who favoured a change of guard at the Centre, gave an unassailable verdict to form a secular Government under the stewardship of the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, the BJP and its allies, in an attempt to tarnish the image, besides bringing disrepute to the country, continued their "pre-poll smear campaign" against her even after they suffered an electoral setback, he said.

As "the BJP and its bandwagon indulged in mean and malicious campaign against her, raising non-issues, which had hurt the inner voice of Ms. Gandhi," she declined the offer of prime ministership in the larger interest of the nation, he pointed out. By renouncing the offer, she had upheld the values of selflessness, sacrifice, secularism and communal harmony, Dr. Ramadoss said.
