Partly cloudy

CHENNAI, MAY 20. The sky on Friday will be partly cloudy and there is a possibility of shower or thundershower in some areas during evening or night. On Thursday, the maximum temperature recorded at Nungambakkam was 37.9 degree Celsius, while the minimum was 28.9. Meenambakkam recorded a maximum of 37.8 and a minimum of 29.2 degree Celsius. Humidity was 48 and 43 per cent.

Power cut

Power supply will be suspended in parts of Mathur, Korattur, Sowcarpet West and East, Pantheon Road, West Mambalam, Tambaram East, T.V. Pet, Gopalapuram and V.O.C. Nagar areas on May 22 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. for maintenance work.

Elected

The office-bearers of the Mormugao Stevedores' Association were elected at the annual general body meeting during the first week of May. T. Kesavan is the president, J.P. Mathur— vice-president, N.Y. Kumbhar— honorary secretary, Ashish Machado— joint secretary, Sudil Manerkar — treasurer and J.L. Viagas, Prakash Kamat and A.P. Fernandes are elected the members.

Pollution level

The Respirable Suspended Particulate Matter was higher than the permissible level of 100 micrograms per cubic metre (mcg/cm) in the Vallalar Nagar traffic intersection — 105 mcg/cm. In the Adyar residential area, it was 40 mcg/cm. The particulate matter in Vallalar Nagar was 272 mcg/cm while in Adyar it was 46 mcg/cm. The sulphur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen were well within the permissible limits during the ambient air quality monitoring done between May 19 and 20 for a 24-hour period.

Dental camp

Baskar Dental Foundation will conduct a free dental camp for senior citizens on May 23 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 54, G.N. Chetty Road, T. Nagar. Telephone: 2815 3118/2815 4639.

Diploma course

Application forms for admission to Diploma in Vocational Training and Employment for the mentally challenged will be issued from May 24. The minimum eligibility is a pass in Plus-Two. Forms are available for Rs. 150 at Navajyothi Trust (Phone: 26257615).

Wins prize

L. Balaji, a student of Ahobila Math Oriental Higher Secondary School, West Mambalam, stood first at Chennai district level in the talent examination in physics conducted by the Physics Society. He was given a cheque for Rs. 1,000. The boy secured first rank in the mathematics talent examination conducted by the Association of Mathematics Teachers of India. He was presented with a medal and cash prize.
