Man dupes boy, escapes with money

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, MAY 20. A man posing as a customer allegedly duped a 10-year-old boy and escaped with Rs. 1.2 lakhs in cash from a hardware shop at Washermenpet yesterday.

The police said Sundaramurthy, owner of the shop on Cemetery Road, was away when a man posing as a customer approached the boy who was supervising it. After making enquiries about certain hardware items, he left the shop.

Meanwhile, some customers who bought certain items came to pay money. Sensing the opportunity, the impostor returned to the shop offering to place a bulk order. He then diverted the boy's attention asking him to get a cup of tea before escaping with the cash. The Washermenpet police have registered a case.

Held for burglary

A 21-year-old employee of a savoury manufacturing shop was arrested today in connection with a burglary reported at the residence of his employer on Devaraja Mudaliar Street, Otteri, on Wednesday. The employee allegedly escaped with 20 sovereigns of gold jewellery and Rs. 70,000 in cash after breaking into the residence of his employer while the family was away. The police said they recovered Rs. 40,000 from the accused.

They are now on the look out for his partner.
