Sethu project: Tuticorin port to seek TNPCB permission

By P. Sudhakar

TUTICORIN, MAY 21. The Tuticorin Port Trust (TPT) is all set to forward its application to the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board to get its permission, a statutory requirement, to start the Sethusamudram Ship Canal Project.

"It has been decided to submit the application to the TNPCB before June 15 and send the final report to the Ministry of Environment and Forest before July," the TPT Chairman, N.K. Raghupathi, told reporters here this evening.

The National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), Nagpur, which conducted a techno-feasibility study with the TPT, has completed an environment management programme on minimising or averting damage during the project implementation to conserve the marine wealth in this region.

Mr. Raghupathi said 21 islands forming the National Marine Park and facilitated fish breeding in the canal region would not be affected in any way, as the entire sea route or the canal was 6-21 km away. As most regions, falling under the proposed project area, were deep to receive ships, deepening would be needed only in shallow regions.

Work on the project could begin by March 2005. A 300-metre wide canal would be dug, after dredging of 32-million cubic metre sand.

On the proposed development works in the TPT, Mr. Ragupathy said the Tuticorin Port Trust proposed to begin the exercise on deepening the harbour to12.80 metre on an outlay of Rs. 400 crore to facilitate hassle-free movement of larger vessels.

The NEERI Director, S. Devotta; the TPT deputy chairman, T. Balakrishnan; and the Tuticorin Collector, K. Rajaraman were present.
