Visakhapatnam
By Our Staff Reporter
VISAKHAPATNAM, MAY 21. The Visakha-II MLA, S. Rangaraju, has declared that he will strive hard to make Visakhapatnam slum-free in the next few years. "My priority is to improve the quality of life in the city, which is growing fast," he told the The Hindu in a telephonic conversation on Thursday. Mr. Rangaraju, who is also the secretary of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), said that he would seek the official machinery's help in sanctioning pucca houses in suitable areas, under various schemes, for slum-dwellers. Mr. Rangaraju, who set a record of sorts when he defeated his nearest rival of the Telugu Desam Party, Palla Simhachalam, by a margin of over 58,000 votes in the recent elections, said that he would also fulfil his promise of sanctioning ration cards to all eligible applicants. Expressing confidence that under the leadership of the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, Visakhapatnam would get a big slice in the allotment of funds, he said the Godavari water diversion project should be expedited to solve the city's drinking water problem. Mr. Rangaraju also said that he would work with other MLAs of the party to boost tourism and convert Visakhapatnam into an international city. "The city possesses a natural splendour due to its beautiful beachfront and Buddhist sites, and the promotion of tourism will be prioritised," he said. On the issue of the haphazard growth of the city, Mr. Rangaraju said he would take up the cause of constructing more flyovers adding that after his return from Hyderabad, he would open an office where he would interact regularly with people.
