VISAKHAPATNAM, MAY 21. The 13th death anniversary of the former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, was observed as Anti-Terrorism Day by Government institutions, offices, the Congress and voluntary organisations here on Friday. The District Revenue Officer, M. Ramakrishna Rao, administered the pledge to the Collectorate staff. The Assistant Director of the Information and Public Relations Department, T. Appa Rao, administered the anti-terrorism oath. The City Congress Committee organised all-religion prayers at its office. The city Congress president, Dronamraju Srinivasa Rao, the Mayor, Rajana Ramani, and the Congress leaders, Y. Mariyadas and G.V. Ravi Raju, spoke. Clothes were distributed to the poor under the auspices of the 5th ward corporator, Lavudu Muralikrishna. The Hindu Muslim Christian Federation distributed fruits to the in-patients of the T.B. Hospital. The city Congress vice-president, Satti Ramakrishna Reddy, and the HMCF president, M.R. Farooqi, participated. A meeting was organised by the Airports Authority of India in which the Senior Manager (ATC), T.P.C. Rao, underlined the need for curbing terrorism. The General Manager (projects) of AAI, Rajiv Goel, spoke. The Andhra University Vice Chancellor, Y.C. Simhadri, called for a global fight against terrorism. Free polio corrective surgeries and distribution of mobility aids like tricycles, callipers and crutches marked the occasion at Prema Hospital. The hospital's director-general, S.V. Adinarayana Rao, who performed the operations, spoke on plans to construct a 1,000-bed hospital near Gambhiram on the National Highway, for the benefit of the physically challenged.
