NEW DELHI, MAY 21. Upset with the decision of the party high command not to give him membership to the Standing Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the Congress Councillor from Nizamuddin, Farhad Suri, has resigned from the MCD House. Son of the senior party MLA from Minto Road, Tajdar Babar, and the outgoing chairman of the Education Committee, Mr. Suri is understood to have sent his resignation to the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi. In the resignation letter, Mr. Suri is believed to have stated that he was disillusioned with the petty politics of the MCD and alleged that the various posts in the civic body were up for sale. Claiming that there was no space for merit or scope for hard work at least in the party's civic body wing, he alleged that non-performers and those indulging in anti-party activities were being awarded with plum posts. Turning down the request of the party leadership to continue as Education Committee chairman, Mr. Suri, who was interested in becoming a member of the powerful Standing Committee, has sent his resignation letter to Ms. Gandhi. Meanwhile, the Congress Councillor, Thakur Dass, filed his nomination for the post of chairman of the Standing Committee, while Usha Aggarwal did so for the post of deputy chairman. For the post of chairman and deputy chairman of Rural Areas Committee, the Congress Councillors, Aruna and Sadhna Sharma, filed their nomination papers. They are expected to be elected unanimous on Monday.
