Career guidance expo

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, MAY 22. After school what? This is a question that comes up just as they step out of schools. Parents and children alike start scouting for the best courses offered by colleges and industrial training institutes. In an effort to bring several educational institutions under one roof, the Government of Pondicherry's Labour department has organised a Vocational and Career Guidance Exhibition at the Gandhi Thidal on Beach Road.

Twentytwo institutions in Pondicherry, Villupuram and Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Erode in Tamil Nadu and other places are participating in the event, which was inaugurated by the Chief Minister N. Rangasamy. Students feel that the exhibition is useful and that they are able to get admissions right here. For girls, who are accompanied by their parents, the exhibition is a blessing since they need not go from one college to another getting application forms and trying for admission.

A few colleges say that the exhibition has been dwarfed due to the presence of a food festival and the stage put up in connection with it. Arts and science colleges, engineering colleges, ITI and also schools are participating in the event, which will go on till Monday. The sought after course for students this year is biochemical engineering. At the Acharya College of Teacher Training, they say that more students are showing interest in taking up teacher education. Nanda Educational Institutions from Erode has come to Pondicherry for the third time and many students are asking for electrical and electronics and communication engineering.
