Thrissur

THRISSUR, MAY 22. The SNDP Union general secretary Vellappally Natesan, has said that it was the wrath of the `voiceless communities' that led to the rout of the UDF in the just-concluded Lok Sabha elections in the State. Inaugurating the regional conference of the Union, Mr. Natesan said the UDF will not be able to overcome their defeat if their leadership is not drawing the proper lessons from this election verdict. He said that in their eagerness to pamper the minorities the problems of the majority were not getting due attention from the Government. To overcome this there must be broad coordination of the sections from the tribals to the Namboodiris, Mr. Natesan suggested. According to him it was the change in the style of functioning of the SNDP leadership after the Independence that led to the marginalisation of the Ezhavas. The real Gurudharma is a confluence of progress in the spiritual and material worlds. But after Independence the activities of the SNDP Union was reduced to mere observation of the Chathayam days and other ritualistic days. The responsibility of bringing in progress in the Ezhava community was entrusted to the politicians. However, other communities did not entrust such tasks to the politicians and therefore they could progress, he argued. Mr. Natesan said that it was the infighting that was blocking the progress of the Ezhava community.
