Five held on robbery charge

By Our Staff Reporter

KOLLAM, MAY 22. The Kollam police today arrested five persons on charges of idol theft and housebreaking. The police said that the gang had been operating in the districts of Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram. Those arrested have been identified as Raveendran, Hassan, Nizaruddin, Kunjuraman Achary and Vijayan.

The police said that the gang had stolen the idol from the Chirayinkeezhu Indilayappan temple. In addition to numerous housebreaks and thefts at shops, the gang is also allegedly involved in the robberies at the Kalluvathukkal, Chirayinkeezhu, Navaikulam and Velinellur grama panchayat offices and the Chanthannur SNDP Union office, the police said.

The idol, a good collection of stolen ornaments and mobile phones were seized from them, the police said. Three members of the gang were released from the Poojapura Central Prison four months ago. Following a spurt in housebreaking incidents in the city, the police maintained a vigil and it led to the arrests. Those arrested were produced before a court here and remanded.
