KOLLAM
May 22.
A seminar on the history of Sivagiri will be held at the Ramaswamy Mutt here on May 26. Organised by the Gurudharma Pracharana Sabha, the seminar will be inaugurated by the SNDP Yogam general secretary, Vellapally Natesan. The SN Trusts treasurer, G. Jayadevan, will deliver the keynote address.
Training
KOCHI
MAY 22.
A training programme was held here today for personnel of the City Police on the Juvenile Justice Act 2000 and Rules 2003, and its implications. Inaugurating the programme, the City Police Commissioner, Vinod Thomas, spoke of the need for a special police force to deal with the problems faced by children. The Crime Detachment ACP, S. Surendran, who is the nodal police officer for the project, presided over the function. Police officers in the rank of ASI and women police constables participated in the training programme.
Expansion
The Ernakulam District Petroleum Dealers' Association has demanded that the uncontrolled expansion of petroleum retail outlets in the district will spell doom for the business, as there was no thinking going into the viability of these retailing outlets being set up.
Temporary transfer list
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM
MAY 22.
The Health Department has published a temporary general transfer list of Assistant Surgeons. An official release said here today that complaints if any about the list should be submitted directly or faxed to the Director of Health Service before 3 p.m. on May 26. The copies of the list are available for reference at the DHS and all medical offices. The DHS fax numbers are 0471 2302745 and 2303080.
Ahmed's induction criticised
The former Congress leader, Cheriyan Philip, has criticised the induction of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leader, E.Ahmed, into the Union Cabinet. In a statement here today, he said that it would affect the secular image of the Government. He claimed that to the people of India, the Muslim League was as much communal as the BJP. He wondered how the new Government which opposed majority communalism could appease minority communalism. He felt that by inducting Mr. Ahmed, the Government was giving an opportunity to the Sangh Parivar to remind the people of Mohammed Ali Jinnah's Muslim League which had propounded the two nation theory and which had divided the country into two.
Keltron's multimedia courses
Classes for the Professional Diploma in Advanced Multimedia Technologies and short-term courses will get under way at the Keltron's Animation Centres in Thiruvananthapuram and Kottayam on June 7. The multimedia course provides specialisation in web engineering, animation, visual effects and game development. The short-term courses are certificate courses in advanced 2 D and 3 D animation, web engineering, audio-video editing and print/publishing. Minimum qualification is Plus Two. The facilities offered on the campus include exposure to time environment and expert systems. More details and applications and prospectus can be had from the Keltron Animation Centre at the Spencer Junction in Thiruvananthapuram and the Dr. George Sudersan Centre in CMS College, Kottayam.
Adoption of animals allowed
The State Government has passed orders allowing individuals and private institutions to adopt animals in the State's zoos. The adoption will cost between Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 50,000 a year. In the case of those giving Rs. 50,000, the zoo will display their names by the side of the enclosure of the animal they adopt. The names of those donating between Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 50,000 a year will be displayed on a common notice board. Those wishing to adopt animals should get in touch with the zoo authorities concerned, a pressnote said.
Media awards announced
The Kerala State Electricity Board Engineers' Association has announced its media awards for this year. P. Venugopal of The Hindu , Thiruvananthapuram, has been selected for the award for the best report on power sector. It was the report "SERC order puts KSEB in a spot", published in The Hindu on April 19, 2004, that fetched him the award. The award for the best editorial on the power sector has gone to N.R.S. Babu of Kalakaumudi magazine. Both the awards, carrying a cash prize of Rs.10, 000 each, besides citations, will be presented at the annual meeting of the Association in Alappuzha on May 23.
Bhoomimitra Award
KOCHI
MAY 22.
A senior reporter of The Hindu in Palakkad, G. Prabhakaran, has won this year's Bhoomimitra Award instituted by the Aluva-based Association for Environmental Protection. The award is in recognition of the contributions made by the awardee towards environmental protection. The award will be given away on June 5 by Sebastian Paul, MP. Mr. Prabhakaran was selected by a committee comprising M.K. Prasad, Gopalakrishna Moorthy, P.S. Gopinathan Nair, Chinnan Painadath and S. Seetharaman, all environmental activists.
WHO recognition for lab
KOCHI
MAY 22.
The toxicology laboratory & poison centre functioning under the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) here has been officially recognised by the World Health Organisation, according to the hospital sources. The department has state-of-the art software packages having detailed information on more than 8,00,000 poisons and drugs encountered worldwide. The centre has also been accorded membership of the American Academy of Clinical Toxicology, according to information available from the hospital.
One injured in clash
ALAPPUZHA
MAY 22.
One person was injured in a scuffle between workers of the McDowell Company Ltd, Varanad, Cherthala, members of the joint action council of shell mining workers and the local public which occurred in front of the company today morning. The council members were protesting against the alleged pollution of Vembanad lake by the company. The injured had been identified as Gopi. Mr. Gopi has been admitted to the Cherthala taluk hospital.
Livestock inspectors' meet
The 45th State conference of the Kerala Livestock Inspectors' Association will be held at the Alappuzha Town Hall on May 23 and 24, the organisers informed. At a press conference here today, the association State president, S. Jayakumar, said the conference would begin with a delegates' meeting on May 23. The Agriculture Minister, K.R. Gouri, would inaugurate the delegates' meeting.
Bomb hoax delays train
KOZHIKODE
MAY 22.
The Kannur-bound Yeshwantpur-Kannur Express train was delayed for about 30 minutes at the Kozhikode Railway Station following information of bomb threat passed on from the Erode station. However, it proved to be a hoax. The train which was due to arrive here at 10-30 a.m. arrived only at 12-10 p.m. following checks at various railway stations in between. The information of a bomb threat was received at the Erode station over telephone. The railway police and the bomb and dog squad of the Kerala police were pressed into service. The search did not yield any result. As the train was to stop its journey in Kannur there was only a few passengers on it. The train could leave from the station only at 12-45 p.m.
Sabarimala temple to open on May 29
PATHANAMTHITTA
May 22.
The anniversary of the idol installation at the Lord Ayyappa Temple at Sabarimala will be celebrated on May 30. The Tantri, Kantaru Rajeevaru, said the temple would be opened on May 29 afternoon for poojas as part of the anniversary celebrations to be held the next day. The Udayasthamana pooja and Padi pooja will be held on May 30, besides a mass feast at the temple after the Utcha pooja. The temple would be closed in the evening.
