KOCHI, MAY 22 . The second phase of a national family survey on reproductive and child health, conducted by the Centre for Socio Economic and Environmental Studies (CSES), Kochi and Institute of Social and Economic Change (ISEC), Bangalore, will begin in the last week of May. The survey, conducted for the Department of Health and Family Welfare, New Delhi, with the International Institute for Population Studies, Mumbai as the nodal agency, was formally inaugurated by the all India coordinator Balram Paswan. The CSES chairman, K.K. George, presided. The survey will be held in Kannur, Kozhikode, Palakkad, Ernakulam, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta and Thiruvananthapuram districts. It was conducted in other districts in 2002 as the first phase. The study, which will also be an evaluation of the Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) programme of the Central Government, will focus upon the spread of anaemia seen in young children, girls and pregnant women. The haemoglobin levels of children below six years, teenage girls and pregnant women will be tested for this purpose by health investigators specially trained at the National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad, who will accompany the survey team. One drop of blood (20 micro litre) will be collected from each individual in the above-mentioned categories. The survey team, including male and female investigators, will collect data from 40 selected centres in each district. The team will visit 28 homes in each centre selected according to systematic sampling, with a total of 1120 houses in each district. The survey will cover topics including the availability of basic health facilities, family planning measures, nursing during pregnancy and baby care as well as awareness on diseases including sexually transmitted diseases like AIDS. The one-week training for the survey team members was led by Jaya Lalmohan, director of the training centre at Ernakulam under the State Health and Family Welfare Department.
