SINGAPORE, MAY 23. Eleven out of 22 awards, including the best picture, went to Karan Johar's home production Kal Ho Na Ho at the glittering ceremony of International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards held here on Saturday night. Hrithik Roshan was voted the best actor ahead of Shah Rukh Khan, and Rakesh Roshan won the award for the best director for their home production Koi Mil Gaya. Preity Zinta, who proved to be the lucky mascot for both the films, won the best actress award. Feroz Khan and Boman Irani won the awards for the best actor in a negative role and best actor in a comic role award for Janasheen and Munna Bhai MBBS. Munna Bhai MBBS also won a couple of awards for Rajkumar Hirani (best screenplay and best editor). Kal Ho Na Ho proved lucky for Jaya Bachchan, who was adjudged the best actress in a supporting role, and Saif Ali Khan, who was voted the best actor in a supporting role. Saif was also declared the Samsung Style Icon and Kareena Kapoor was awarded the Samsung Diva award. Shahid Kapoor and Amrita Rao won the awards for the best new face of the year. The music director trio of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy won the awards for the best background score and the best music director for the Karan Johar production. Karan Johar won the best story award for Kal Ho Na Ho, directed by Nikhil Advani. The film shot mostly around New York also won awards for lyricist Javed Akhtar, Udit Narayan (the best male playback singer), Manish Malhotra (costume designer) and Mickey Contractor (best make-up). Koi Mil Gaya won technical awards for the best special effects, sound recording and song recording. The other awardees were Shreya Goshal who took home the award for the best female playback singer and Lesli who was given the technical award for his work in re-recording for J.P.Dutta's war movie LoC. Earlier, Amitabh Bachchan, brand ambassador of IIFA, welcomed the President of Singapore, S.R. Nathan, with compliments to the country for its enforcement of discipline and efficient organisation. The Singapore Minister for Trade and Industry, George Yeo, said that Bollywood was an essential part of Singapore. ``Singapore isn't Singapore without the India in Singapore,'' he said. There was a standing ovation from the members of the Indian film industry for Dilip Kumar when he collected his outstanding achievement in Indian cinema award. Yash Johar was given the award for his outstanding contribution to Indian cinema after a moving speech by his son Karan on the need for sons to show their affection to their fathers. ``There is a gap separating the name and the surname,'' he said. Present day superstars paid tributes to the superstars of yesteryear with dance performances. Shah Rukh Khan danced for songs of Dilip Kapoor, Vivek Oberoi for Amitabh Bachchan, Shahid Kapoor for Rajesh Khanna and Arshad Varsi paid rich tributes to Shammi Kapoor, standing in for Saif Ali Khan who was injured in a charity celebrity football match held the day before the awards. The trio of Amrita Arora, Isha Koppikar and Yana Gupta danced to a medley of Helen songs and the Shankar Ehsaan Loy trio paid their tributes to the music legends with a medley.
