BELLARY, MAY 23. S.N. Jayaram, Deputy Commissioner, has urged officials of the Health Department to not only create awareness among the people about contagious diseases but also take steps to check them. Presiding over a meeting here on Saturday, Mr. Jayaram said in view of the onset of monsoon, action plans should be chalked out to check diseases such as brain fever, dengue, malaria, and cholera. He instructed the Health officials to take up fogging from June 1 to eliminate mosquitoes which were responsible for outbreak of diseases, isolating pigs, checking sale of cut fruits, spraying, cleaning open drains etc. He said the civic authorities would be permitted to buy fogging machines. He also directed that IEC (information, education, and communication) activities be speeded up and called for roping in women self-help groups, and organising health camps at hobli and taluk level for creating health awareness among the people. Shivalli, while explaining the steps being taken by the department, said 90 cases of brain fever had been reported in Bellary and neighbouring areas in 2003 and eight children had died. Following is the district-wise break-up of the cases (figures in bracket indicate number of deaths): Bellary 54 (6), Koppal 14 (2), Raichur 11 (0), Anantapur 9 (0), Kurnool 2 (0). During the current year one case of dengue had been reported from Belagal tanda in Bellary taluk. Last year, 10 cases were reported five in Hagari Bommanahalli, two each in Kudligi and Bellary taluk, and one case in Hospet taluk, he said.
