Commonwealth conditions irk Pakistan

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD, MAY 24. Peeved over the conditions attached by Commonwealth for its re-admission into its fold, Pakistan today asserted that it would not take dictation on internal matters from outside.

The Pakistani President, Pervez Musharraf, chose to ventilate his anger on the Commonwealth conditionalities at a students' convention. He was referring to the statement made by Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) while announcing return of Pakistan to the grouping. Implied in the statement was the suggestion that the body could reconsider membership of Pakistan from the Councils of Commonwealth if Gen. Musharraf failed to keep his promise of quitting the job of Chief of Army Staff. Under an agreement between the Government and the religious parties Gen. Musharraf has to leave the Army by the end of the year.

In recent weeks, there have been doubts whether Gen. Musharraf would do so.
