Nambadan got the shock of his life

By Our Special Correspondent

KOCHI, MAY 24. Fresh from an astounding electoral victory in Mukundapuram, Lonappan Nambadan, MP, says he was `shocked' by the big majority he got.

"Everybody, that includes me, was shocked," Mr. Nambadan, known for his humour and practical jokes, told mediapersons here on Monday. When the television set had announced that he had defeated K. Karunakaran's daughter, Padmaja Venugopal, by 1.17 lakh votes, his first thought was that probably the voting machine had gone wrong.

"Even Mr. Karunakaran could muster only a 52,000-vote majority in the last election."

But then the election in Mukundapuruam was, Mr. Nambadan says, basically a vote against Mr. Karunakaran's kind of politics - against `family rule' and `politics of sons and daughters'. Mukundapuram voters, like those in other parts of the State, had no stomach for factionalism, intrigues and manoeuvres.

"That was why they elected me," he said.

But, Mr. Nambadan is humble about his achievements. He had no big ambitions. "I only wanted to be an MP (member of panchayat); but alas, I ended a different MP (Member of Parliament)," he says with a touch of humour.

He has been an MLA six times and a Minister twice, but had lost the last Assembly election from Kodakara.

"That defeat was a blessing in disguise. Otherwise, I would not have become an MP now. I was pretty lucky and God was on my side," says Mr. Nambadan, the believer. "Having won the election on the `Arival-Chuttika-Nakshatram' symbol has not made me a non-believer," he said amidst peals of laughter.

But Mr. Nambadan is serious when he says this: "The one thing I learned from my elections is that our society still gives a lot of importance to personal integrity and morality in public life."
