BANGALORE, MAY 24. The five new legislators of the Janata Dal (United) who met here today elected J. Madhuswamy of Chikkanayakanahalli as the party's Floor Leader in the Legislative Assembly, and Anjanaiah from Brahmasagara as the deputy leader. Nagamani Nage Gowda would be the party's whip in the Assembly. Announcing this to presspersons, the Janata Dal (U) General Secretary, M.P. Nadagouda, said the Janata Dal (U) would maintain its identity in the legislature, though it was an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party. "We will continue to be part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA)," he said while ruling out merger with any party. Dr. Nadagouda said the Janata Dal (U) was ready for talks with the Janata Dal (Secular) on the formation of a government in the State, but that party was keen on a tie-up with the Congress. Though there had not been any formal or informal talks with the Janata Dal (S) leaders, he said efforts would commence once that party stopped talking to the Congress. The poll verdict was against the Congress, but it was unfortunate that it was still making efforts to form the government.
