Temperature crosses 40 degree Celsius

Gannavaram airport recorded a maximum of 41.3 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 27.5 degrees Celsius on Monday. Humidity which was 53 per cent in the morning dropped to 44 per cent in the evening.

Commodity prices

Following are the prices (in rupees per kg) of the essential commodities in the local wholesale markets on Monday, according to the Vijayawada Chambers of Commerce and Industry: groundnut oil - Rs. 54.50, palmolein oil - Rs. 44.75, sunflower oil - Rs. 53, tamarind (flower variety) - Rs. 29 to 35, tamarind (karipuli variety) - Rs. 38 to 43, chillies - Rs. 16 to 26, rice (2716) - Rs. 13, rice (superfine) - Rs. 14 to 15, rice (samba masoori) - Rs. 15 to 16, black gram - Rs. 19.50 to 25.30, red gram - Rs. 27 to 31.

Bank shifted

The Machavaram branch of the State Bank of India has been shifted to new premises at Chuttuguntua centre on Eluru road on Saturday. It was inaugurated by the SBI Vijayawada zonal office deputy general manager, N.V. Suryanarayana Rao. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Rao said already 49 ATMs were opened in the module and a few more would be opened shortly. The bank is also planning to actively participate in Krishna pushkarams by providing facilities for pilgrims in association with the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation and Durga Malleswara Swamy Devasthanams.

Family planning camp

Lions Club of Vijayawada East and Vasavi Club of Vijayawada East jointly organised a free family planning operations camp at the Patamata urban family welfare centre on Monday. The camp was organised under the supervision of medical officer, N.R. Pavan Kumar, and operations were performed on more than 70 people.

Free computer training centre

A free computer training centre aimed at imparting training in computer sciences to unemployed youth was inaugurated at the Pezzonipet RCM Church premises on Saturday. The centre will offer free computer coaching to the poor. Those opting for training would be charged nominal amount towards maintenance while the Don Bosco Navajivan Society would bear the remaining costs, according to Thomas Koshi, the executive director of Navajivan Bala Bhavan.

Recognition granted

The microbiology and biochemistry wings of the Montessori Mahila Kalasala have been granted recognition by Nagarjuna University as research centres from the current academic year. The kalasala received a communication to this effect from the university authorities on Monday, according to the Montessori Mahila Kalasala director and correspondent, V. Koteswaramma.
