HYDERABAD, MAY 25. The State CPI has suggested implementation of the Rural Indebtedness Act after amending it suitably in tune with the present situation, to deter debt-ridden farmers from committing suicide. In a representation submitted to the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, a delegation of the CPI, led by its State secretary, S. Sudhakar Reddy, also demanded waiver of loans up to Rs. 30,000 and recovery of the rest in instalments. Other demands are payment of compensation of Rs. 1,000 per acre to farmers who lost the crop owing to drought last year, implementation of crop insurance scheme after amending it, work for unemployed farm labour in dry lands and supply of seed and fertilizers at 50 per cent subsidy. They also insisted on the implementation of Rs. 5,000-crore special package for Telangana and construction of irrigation projects on priority basis in Telangana and Rayalaseema regions. At a press conference later, Mr. Sudhakar Reddy said an appeal was made to the Chief Minister, to withdraw "innumerable cases" foisted against workers of Left parties and the Congress, who fought against anti-people policies like power tariff hike and took part in the APSRTC and Singareni Collieries employees strikes. He said the Chief Minister gave an assurance to consider their demands favourably. They thanked the Government for announcing free power to the farm sector and waiver of Rs. 1,100 crores electricity dues. The one-time settlement for farmers in distress was fine but more needed to be done, they added.
