Warehouse project for Tirupur exports to EU

By Our Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE, MAY 25. To study details of time and expenditure for knitwear transport from Tirupur to a European Union (EU) destination under a warehouse project, the Tuticorin-based St. John Freight Systems is likely to go in for trial shipment.

To be conducted in coordination with the Tirupur Exporters' Association (TEA), this exercise will also assess measures to bring down the cost.

The TEA president, A. Sakthivel, said the association signed a memorandum of understanding with St. John Freight Systems, whose team had conducted a study in the EU. Antwerp was identified as the destination for setting up the warehouse. About 60 per cent of knitwear exports from Tirupur were meant for the EU. The project aimed at helping the exporters increase enhance their penetration in European markets, especially after the phase-out of quotas, through sale and supply "off-the-shelf".
