Irrigation supply for kuruvai
By Our Staff Reporter
NAGAPATTINAM,
MAY 25.
With reference to the report `No scope for raising kuruvai unless Mettur storage improves' ( The Hindu , May 21, 2004), S. Ranganathan, general secretary of the Cauvery Delta Farmers Welfare Association, writes:
``It is true that kuruvai paddy crop is raised utilising groundwater in the Cauvery water division covering the areas from Tiruvaiyaru to Sirkazhi but continuous and reckless drawal of water utilising submersible pumpsets to depths ranging from 250 to 400 feet has already created serious problems such as seawater ingress along the coastal belt near Sirkazhi and Tarangampadi taluks. Care should be taken to utilise groundwater in conjunction with surface water so that the available groundwater could be utilised essentially for drinking water needs, besides providing irrigation.''
