CHENNAI, MAY 25. The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board's new bill collection centre at Ambattur will continue to function on the same premises as it is considered to be safely located near local taluk office, according to the Board. Responding to a news item published on May 13 in these columns, the TNEB said the new building was constructed to provide computerised billing services to the public. Moreover, the centre that was previously situated on Oragadam Road was required to vacate as it was functioning on a rented premises. Shelter has also been provided for the convenience of the consumers who wait to pay bills at the new centre. Residents of Vijayalakshmipuram, Venkatapuram and Vinayagapuram have to remit the electricity charges in the new office. Residents of Prithivakkam and its neighbourhood (who come under Ambattur North Section) may pay their bills at the old office until the office is shifted to Menambedu. Referring to the residents' demand of shifting the premises to Executive Engineer's office, the board said it was not feasible due to the space constraint. Residents had earlier complained that the new collection centre was located in a deserted place. They had also demanded provision of proper shelter to protect them from waiting in long queues in sweltering heat.
