Marks card racket busted, ex-official among seven held

BANGALORE, MAY 25. The Kalasipalyam police on Monday busted a fake marks card racket and arrested seven persons, including a 70-year-old retired superintendent of Bangalore University.

The marks cards carried imprints of Bangalore and Calcutta universities.

The police gave the names of the accused as Ijaz Ahmed (37) of BTM Layout, M. Tibbegowda (23) of Jayanagar, Venugopal (42) of Banaswadi, Bhadregowda (36), a lecturer from Basaveshwaranagar, Bairappa (28) of Laggere Layout, Avinash S.T. (23) of Subash Nagar, and Jagannath (70), retired Bangalore University superintendent from Rajajinagar.

Hariprasad of Avenue Road had filed a complaint that Ijaz Ahmed allegedly demanded Rs. 50,000 for providing a marks card of a degree examination. Ijaz reportedly gave the marks card after taking an advance of Rs. 5,000. Hariprasad found that it was a fake marks card when he produced it at a nationalised bank to get a job.

The police arrested Ijaz and Tibbegowda and recovered 11 blank marks card of B.Sc., B.Com, and B.A degree examinations of Bangalore University. There were also blank marks cards of pre-university and SSLC examinations. The police seized 15 seals including that of Bangalore University and four colleges affiliated to it.

The police said Ijaz used to offer paying guest accommodation to students in the city. He allegedly arranged for fake marks cards for students from outside the State and for those who had secured low marks. He reportedly charged Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 1 lakh for each marks card, the police said. They said Venugopal printed fake marks cards.

Computer stolen: A man stole a laptop computer worth Rs. 75,000 from a woman passenger at the Bangalore Airport on Saturday evening.

In her complaint, Sarabani Bandopadhya, an employee of a private company, said she was seated near the `C' gate of the departure section of the airport waiting for a flight. She was carrying a bag and a laptop computer. A man came up to her and said some money had fallen on the floor, and Ms. Bandopadhya picked it up. After some time, she noticed that the computer was missing, and reported the matter to Airport Control. The officials showed her video clippings from closed-circuit television but she could not identify the culprit.

Defence unit burgled: Burglars entered the office of a Defence organisation in the Jalahalli police station limits and took away electronic goods and uniforms worth Rs. 3.5 lakh. In a complaint, G. Narendra, an officer, said the burglary was noticed on Tuesday.

The locks of some doors were broken and equipment worth Rs. 1.9 lakh, a colour television, other electronic goods, and uniforms were taken away.

Cash, goods taken away: Goods worth nearly Rs. 6 lakh and Rs. 15,000 in cash were stolen from the house of a software engineer at HAL 2nd Stage in the Indiranagar police station limits on Monday night.

The police said G. Raghuraman had gone to a temple along with his family at 8 p.m. When he returned, he noticed that the lock of the front door had been broken.

Held on murder charge: The Banaswadi police on Monday arrested four persons in connection with the murder of Navin Raj of Jai Jawan Nagar on May 6.

The names of those arrested were given as Stevan (23), Mukundraj (20), Samson (20), and Shekhar (25), all from Ramaswamy Palya.

The police said they allegedly bludgeoned Navin Raj to death on the Shaneshwara Temple premises.
