Shimoga
By Our Special Correspondent
SHIMOGA, MAY 26. K.S. Eshwarappa, Shimoga MLA, has said that agriculture students should be allowed to do more field experiments as classroom lectures alone will not suffice to help them learn the basics of farming. Inaugurating an agriculture exhibition-cum-training programme organised by the Department of Agriculture and the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, at Yalavatti near here on Tuesday, he urged agriculture graduates to interact with farmers to gain firsthand information on the problems facing the farming sector. He advised farmers to take an active part in the seminars and discussions being held by the university so as to acquaint themselves with the latest innovations in agriculture. Mr. Eshwarappa said the Stree Shakti Scheme had led to a greater awareness among women about the need to improve their finances and acquire livelihood skills. The Vice-Chancellor of the university, M.N. Sheelavantar, asked farmers to seek adequate support price for their produce. The programme was unique as agriculture graduates would undergo a five-week field training with farmers, he added. T.K. Prabhakar Shetty, Director of the Regional Research Station of the university at Navile near here, who presided over the function, said paddy could be cultivated using only half the water used for irrigating the crop now with the help of a scientific method evolved by the university. The method would be demonstrated all over the State for the benefit of farmers. Mallikarjun Murugharajendra Swamiji of Bekkinakalmath called upon farmers to work collectively to solve their problems. The President of the Holebenavalli Gram Panchayat, B. Nagaraj; Vishweshwara Gowda of the university; and H. Manjappa, Joint Director of Agriculture, spoke.
