Drainage scheme for Ramanathapuram

By Our Staff Reporter

RAMANATHAPURAM, MAY 26. The Ramanathapuram municipality today unanimously passed a resolution to implement a Rs. 30-crore underground drainage scheme.

The meeting, chaired by V. Jaganathan, also urged the State Government to consider the proposal at the earliest, as sewage was being let into many water bodies in the town.

To meet the initial payment, the municipality decided to collect a deposit of Rs. 3,500 from each household and Rs. 5000 from commercial establishments, besides a monthly service charge of Rs. 150 and Rs. 450 respectively. It identified 13,000 domestic and 600 commercial connections to be covered under the scheme.

Greeting Dr. Manmohan Singh for having assumed office as Prime Minister, the council demanded that the Sethu Samuthiram project be implemented at the earliest and the Madurai- Rameswaram line be converted to broad gauge.

Earlier, Bose, representing the second ward, alleged that most of the streetlights were not functioning. Mr. Karuppannan of the 30th ward said three electric posts in his ward were damaged, but they were not set right.

The Commissioner, P. Vasuki, warned that action would be taken against the staff if they were not doing their duty properly.
