Silverstone's future secure till 2006

SILVERSTONE: The British Grand Prix will continue to be staged at Silverstone at least until 2006 under a deal reached on Tuesday between the circuit owners and Formula One chief Bernie Ecclestone.

The British Racing Drivers' Club gave Ecclestone assurances that the circuit will undergo significant long-term improvements.

Ecclestone has been critical of the ageing Silverstone circuit in central England and threatened to move to another venue — or abandon a British-based race — unless the facility is modernised.

After a series of meetings involving the BRDC's Jackie Stewart, Ecclestone and the British government, the race's future at Silverstone was secured for the next two years.

The BRDC said in a statement ``there will be significant long-term investment at Silverstone to raise the standards of the circuit and its facilities to the level of its international competitors.''

``Bernie Ecclestone is supportive of the proposals being discussed and is anxious to retain the Grand Prix in the United Kingdom, for the good of the country and the sport,'' the statement said. — AP
