Left parties accept proposal on Speaker

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, MAY 26. The Left parties today formally accepted the proposal from the Congress offering the post of Speaker of the 14th Lok Sabha to senior Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader, Somnath Chatterjee. The CPI(M) had approved the proposal at its meeting in Kolkata on Tuesday.

The CPI(M) general secretary, Harkishan Singh Surjeet and his CPI counterpart, A.B. Bardhan told correspondents that all the four Left parties had accepted the proposal. Representatives of the CPI(M), the Communist Party of India, the Revolutionary Socialist Party and the All India Forward Bloc attended the meeting.

The Left parties, which had met here earlier last Sunday on the issue of Speakership, had deferred a decision till the CPI(M) Polit Bureau took a final view on the offer.
