Will to learn makes Kancheepuram night schools successful

By Our Staff Reporter

KANCHEEPURAM, MAY 25. The inclination to learn and dedication to enlighten have resulted in ``nilavoli palligal'' (night schools), being run in Kancheepuram district, to register more than 60 per cent pass percentage in the Plus-Two examinations for the second consecutive year.

While 28 out of 43 who appeared for the March 2004 examinations came out successfully, last year 12 out of 19 appeared cleared it. The night schools, started in 1998, turned out to be a boon for boys and girls unable to take up regular school education or discontinued it for family circumstances.

The number of beneficiaries which increased from 785 in 1998-99 to the present 2,756 persons indicates the aspiration to learn among dropouts and other children pushed into work in early ages. The instances of 7 students, who cleared SSLC examinations as private candidates in 2001 and subsequently completed industrial training course at an institute at Sunguvarchatram; another student successfully completing his polytechnic course this year; 12 others pursuing their degree through correspondence and one person doing his Masters in Public Administration clearly show how the night school concept had helped these students to take up higher studies without affecting their ability or necessity to earn.

Interestingly, those teaching in the 36 night schools have not underwent any training.

At some schools, some of the past students themselves took up the mantle.

Awareness programmes such as processions and street-corner meetings highlighting the need to provide education to children evoked a positive response from parents. Those who deployed children below 14 in their handloom units have now made up their minds to avoid such acts, say official sources.

Apart from the ``nilavoli palligal'', special schools are being run in Kancheepuram for the benefit of 141 children freed from bonded labour two years ago.
