CUDDALORE, MAY 26. The State Government has sanctioned a sum of Rs 1.55 crores under the Drought Relief Scheme to Cuddalore district, according to Gagandeep Singh Bedi, District Collector. In a statement here, Mr Bedi noted that the allocation had been made keeping in mind the deficit rainfall that the district received during 2003-04, and the resultant water scarcity. The funds would be utilised solely for improving water supply in the village panchayats, town panchayats and municipalities. A lions' share of Rs 95 lakhs would go to the village panchayats to install the India Mark-II hand pumps and sinking deep borewells in as many as 13 local bodies. The works would include extension of the pipeline at a cost of Rs 9.49 lakhs, for the purchase of electric motors and other electrical works. Rupees 40 lakhs had been earmarked to the town panchayats for undertaking the following works. For the installation of hand pumps and sinking of deep borewells - Rs 9.90 lakhs; for other power operated schemes - Rs 3.40 lakhs, and for giving new pipe connections to residences - Rs 26.70 lakhs. The five municipalities of Cuddalore, Panruti, Nellikuppam, Vridhachalam and Chidambaram would share an amount of Rs 20 lakhs for augmenting water supply. This would include sinking of four deep borewlls at a cost of Rs 6 lakhs, for extending pipe connections - Rs 10.25 lakhs, for the purchase of electric motors - Rs 2.55 lakhs, and for laying pipeline to the pumping station - Rs 1.20 lakhs. The Collector noted that all these works would become operational by this month-end.
