KARIMNAGAR, MAY 26. Speakers at an all-party meeting organised by the district administration to discuss about the spate of farmers suicide have unanimously suggested the lifting of Godavari waters to the upland areas of the district as the only long-term solution to stop suicide by farmers and all-round development of the district. Calling upon farmers not to resort to the extreme step of suicide, the leaders suggested the authorities to check the supply of spurious seeds and pesticides. They also urged for the implementation of the Rural Indebtedness Relief Act and stoppage of forcible collection of loans from farmers. The meeting was organised under the chairmanship of the Minister for Endowments, M. Satyanarayana Rao, here on Wednesday evening. Those who attended were the legislators-elect, D. Sridhar and T. Jeevan Reddy of the Congress, Ch Rajeshwara Rao and Sana Maruthi of the TDP, Chada Venkat Reddy (CPI), Etala Rajender and Koppula Eshwar (TRS), the Zilla Parishad chairman, K.V. Rajeshwara Rao, the BJP district president, P. Sugunakar Rao and representatives of voluntary organisations and the in-charge Collector and Joint Collector, M. Dana Kishore and the district officials. Presiding over the meeting, Mr. Satyanarayana Rao said that majority of suicides by farmers took place in the upland drought prone areas where water for irrigation had become precious. He suggested that the lifting of waters from the Lower Manair Dam (LMD) to the upland region tanks was the solution to stop suicides. The TDP legislator-elect, Ch Rajeshwara Rao said that the Government should impose moratorium on the collection of cooperative and banks loans for a period two years. He also suggested grant of Rs. 50,000 to each Rythu mitra clubs for the rotation of amount among the farmers. He urged the Government to include the utilisation of Godavari waters to the upland mandals. The TDP MLA-elect and retired SRSP CE, Sana Maruthi, said that the integration of Yellampalli and SRSP Flood flow canal projects was the only solution to solve the irrigation problem of the upland regions. Both the projects, if integrated, could utilise about 60 tmcft of water for the upland regions in the district, he said.
