MAHBUBNAGAR, MAY 26. Harassment by private moneylenders, sinking borewells indiscriminately, unscientific cropping pattern, lack of support price to farm produce were the main causes that instigate farmers to suicide, the newly-elected MLAs, MPs and farmers representatives pointed out at a meeting convened by the District Collector, K. Madhusudhana Rao, to elicit suggestions to curb farmers suicide. The meeting appealed debt-trapped farmers not to resort to the extreme step as the government was formulating a comprehensive plan to bail them out. They opined that commercial and cooperative banks must extend loans to farmers so that they do not approach private moneylenders. The Wanaparthy MLA, G. Chinna Reddy, said that the farming community required about Rs. 36,000 crores for its farming activity in the State of which only Rs. 9,000 crore was being extended by the commercial and cooperative banks. For the remaining Rs. 27,000 crores, the farmers were dependent on private lenders. This must be checked, he opined.
