Manipur drubs Orissa

KOLKATA, MAY 26. Manipur thrashed East Zone champion Orissa 7-0 in a Group B league encounter of the 13th National under-21 football championship for the M. Dutta Roy Trophy, being played at the Jamalpur Railway Stadium in Bihar's Munger district.

According to information received here on Wednesday, defending champion Bengal also made a winning start beating West Zone topper Goa 1-0.

Striker Syed Rahim Nabi scored from a free-kick in the 36th minute to give Bengal full three points.

Goa had a couple of scoring opportunities in the second session but forward Zico D'Souza was off target.

Manipur pummelled Orissa with repeated strikes, most of which came in the second session.

R. Bannychiru opened the account for Manipur in the 23rd minute. He scored again in the 43rd minute making it 2-0 at half-time.

Manipur doubled the aggression in the second session, which fetched it five goals in the bargain.

T. Shyamo Singh (85th and 90th minutes), Meikingai Kamei (58th), O. Bijeshor Singh (76th) and Bannychiru (83rd) accounted for the rest of Manipur's tally. — Our Sports Reporter
