Anju to miss Hengelo meet
NEW DELHI,
MAY 26.
Long jumper Anju B. George will be missing the Grand Prix opener in Europe, at Hengelo, on May 31. With a few visa-related issues yet to be sorted out, Anju had to reluctantly take the decision to skip the event in the Netherlands.
Anju and her husband-coach, Bobby George, now planning to make Paris as their base before the Athens Olympics, are toying with the idea of going to Turin, Italy, for the Primo Nebiolo meet, a Grand Prix II event, on June 4. Anju is then scheduled to compete in the Super Grand Prix meet at Ostrava, Czech Republic, on June 8.
Anju has an invitation to compete in the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, USA, on June 19. If the Ostrava trip comes off, she will travel to the US on June 9 for training there before the Eugene meet. Gateshead, Britain, will be her next stop on June 27.
Anju, currently ranked No. 4 in the world, is sixth in the season's lists with her 6.66m recorded here on April 15. Her wind-aided 6.82m at Doha recently will not count for the main lists. Ahead of her are: Elva Golubourne (Jam) 7.16, Marion Jones (USA) 6.74, Yudelkis Fernandez (Cub) 6.74, Bronwyn Thompson (Aus) 6.72 and Guan Yingnan (Chn) 6.71. Our Special Correspondent
