On to the rapid version...
KOZHIKODE,
MAY 26.
It's like playing a one-day series straight after the Test matches in cricket. Many of the participants of the National children's rapid chess championship, which opens at the Chess India Complex on Thursday, were also there at the National sub-junior tourney, which concluded at the same venue on Wednesday.
Young boys and girls who had 90 minutes (plus an increment of 30 seconds) each to ponder over in a tournament of classical chess will now have to make their moves within 20 minutes (with an increment of 10 seconds per move). Over 200 players are expected for the three-day event.
Competitions will be held, separately for boys and girls, in three age-groups under-16, 14 and 12. The event carries a prize-fund of Rs. 85,000. Our Sports Reporter
