TIRUCHI, MAY 26. The district administration and the police have rescued 13 bonded labourers belonging to Jambumedu near Thathaiyangarpettai here, from a stone quarry at Kargila in Udupi district, Karnataka. The labourers were found working under appalling conditions by the rescue team, comprising officials of the Revenue and Police departments, which carried out the task on the directions of the Collector, K. Manivasan, and the Superintendent of Police, P. Nagarajan. The Collector acted on a petition presented to him during his weekly grievances redressal day meeting, by a non-government organisation. The labourers complained that they were underpaid at the quarry and that they were denied permission by their employer to visit their native village. The rescued labourers were provided with 10 kg rice each, dhotis, sarees and kerosene. Each of the labourers is entitled to Rs.20,000 each for rehabilitation, official sources added.
