Visakhapatnam
By Our Staff Reporter
VISAKHAPATNAM, MAY 26. The Minister for Commercial Taxes, Konathala Ramakrishna, has said that the Godavari drinking water project for Visakhapatnam would be reviewed by the State Government. At a meet-the-press programme organised by the Vizag Journalists' Forum here on Wednesday, he said the project had raised apprehensions among people and that it would be reviewed so as not to cast any additional financial burden on users. Given people's fears over the project, he pointed out, there was a need to study all aspects of it and `ascertain the facts'. Ruling out the Raiwada reservoir as one of the drinking water sources for Visakhapatnam, he said: "We shall honour our commitment of Raiwada waters for farmers.'' Mr. Ramakrishna, who had led an agitation demanding Raiwada water exclusively for farmers, said that the struggle was path-breaking in the State and that it had served to focus the attention of people and the Government on the need to provide irrigation facilities to farmers. He gave an assurance to people of Visakhapatnam that they would not suffer for want of drinking water "as there are many alternative sources, which are closer and do not require much investment.'' Asked about the fate of major infrastructure projects initiated in Visakhapatnam like Gangavaram port, Special Economic Zone, Pharma City and Apparel Park, the Minister clarified that there would be no blanket review of the projects launched by the previous Government and "only projects that had given scope for doubt among people would be reviewed.''
