Vijayawada
VIJAYAWADA, MAY 26. The District Collector, K. Prabhakar Reddy, alleged that even suicides not driven by debt burden were being projected so by relatives to get the compensation recently announced by the State Government. He clarified that there was only one debt-related suicide by a farmer in Krishna district in the past week and not five as is being made out. In an informal talk with reporters here on Wednesday, Mr. Reddy said the only case of debt-induced suicide was of a tobacco farmer at Veerulapadu. "We inquired into all the cases reported in the district and found that the other cases are bogus,'' he said. In one case, a person ended his life over an illicit affair. But it was claimed that mounting debts forced him to end life, he said. The Collector sought to disagree with political leaders who wanted the Government to impose a moratorium on the recovery of loans. Such a measure would prove counter-productive, since banks will not be able to issue fresh loans if they cannot recover loans, he said. However, the Government fully sympathised with the farmers and would not recover loans forcibly, he said.
