This Day That Age
Prime Minister Nehru has corrected references about his offer of family jewellery for conversion into cash subscription to the National Plan Loan. In a statement in Simla on May 27, he said he had no family jewellery and what he had offered was an Ashoka pillar of solid gold and diamonds presented to him by the citizens of Bombay on his birthday in November 1949. He said: "I have seen references in the press to the effect that I have given some family jewellery for conversion into the National Plan Loan bonds and that these bonds are to be dedicated for children's welfare. I should like to correct this statement."
