RIO DE JANEIRO: From a friendly match in Spain to Rio's most notorious slum, Ronaldo twice won the day all within 24 hours. In the poor `City of God' district on the city's west side, Ronaldo pledged more than 100,000 reals ($30,000) on Wednesday (May 26) to help renovate a theatre that will be the centrepiece of a cultural centre. ``I feel very proud because I'm doing something for lots of children. When I was child I had very little opportunity for recreation and I had to make the opportunities for myself,'' said Ronaldo, who grew up in the Bento Ribeiro neighbourhood on Rio's poor north side. A day earlier, the Real Madrid striker scored a pair of goals to lead Brazil over Catalonia 5-2 in an international friendly against the team from northeastern Spain. The money for the renovation comes from the proceeds of a charity match played in December between friends of Ronaldo and colleagues of Real Madrid teammate Zinedine Zidane. Ronaldo's team won 4-3 in the UN-sponsored event, dubbed ``The Match Against Poverty.'' Ronaldo said money from the game would also be used in similar projects in Brazil and around the world. AP
