MELBOURNE: Sarah Ulmer of New Zealand broke the women's individual pursuit world record at the World track cycling championships on Thursday (May 27), beating former holder Leontien Zijllard-Van Moorsel of the Netherlands in a qualifying heat. Going head to head over 3,000 metres with Zijllard-Van Moorsel, Ulmer finished in 3 minutes, 30.604 seconds, breaking the Dutch rider's mark of 3:30.816 by nearly a fifth of a second. Zijllard-Van Moorsel, who finished fifth in 3:35.349, set the previous mark while winning gold in the event at the Sydney 2000 Olympics. Olga Slyusareva of Russia was second fastest in 3:33.926, followed by Australian Katie Mactier in 3:34.145. ``I am just elated,'' Ulmer said after her world record ride, adding that she wasn't thinking of a gold medal in Friday's final. ``I just want to catch my breath and warm down. I don't want to get carried away yet.'' Zijllard-Van Moorsel said before the Melbourne event that she expected her world record might be broken by Ulmer, and that the Athens Olympics in August was her main aim. AP
