VISAKHAPATNAM, MAY 27. Loan facility for farmers who do not own lands but till them on lease and counselling for farmers as well as their family members in distress were among the suggestions put forth at an all-party meeting held on the spate of suicides at the Collectorate on Wednesday. The meeting, chaired by the Commercial Taxes Minister, Konathala Ramakrishna, pointed out that a majority of farmers did not own any lands and therefore banks were not willing to lend them money. This forced them to take loans from private moneylenders. Therefore, it was suggested that the loan facility by cooperative banks, commercial banks and other agencies, as well as supply of seeds and other inputs and subsidy, be extended to them directly. The Visakha-I MLA-elect, Dronamraju Satyanarayana, suggested that such farmer be issued identity cards lest the benefits would go only to the actual owner. The Director of Green Vision, G. Prabhakar, suggested that counselling be provided not only to farmers, but also to their family members.Mr. Ramakrishna assured the gathering that the Government would go to any extent to help farmers. Agriculture and irrigation, which were neglected hitherto, would now be given top priority and free power, supply of seeds and crop loans should help farmers, he hoped. The district Collector, Sunil Sharma, who welcomed the participants, said that a helpline had been provided at the Collectorate and farmers in distress could contact him on telephone numbers 2560098 or 2563121 (Extn. 721). An official of the rank of MRO would immediately attend to their problem, he said.
