Athirai outwits Priya

COIMBATORE, MAY 27. When IWM-norm holder Priya of Chennai made her first move of the day she looked confident of beating her opponent Athirai from Dindigul.

However, it was Athirai who had the last laugh, cashing in on Priya's tactical blunder to score a 32-move win in the second round of the 32nd Tamil Nadu State women's chess championship at the Kumaraguru College of Technology campus here today.

In a Sicilian Defence game, Priya played Qd3 on the 12th move instead of exchanging the queens for a slight endgame advantage. It was not a critical error, but a knight manoeuvre to c4 proved disastrous.

Athirai made good use of the situation and moved her bishop to b5, pinning the queen on d3 with a discovered attack.

Following a tactical sequence, Priya had no option but to sacrifice a piece and the game in 32 moves.
