PANAJI, MAY 27. Venkatesh Pai Raikar, Marathi writer and stage artiste, passed away here recently following a brief illness, family sources said. He was 92 and is survived by four sons and two daughters. Mr. Raikar had translated many Portuguese works, mainly novels, into Marathi, prominent among them being Teen Tarunee (1942) from the original Tres Raparigas em Liberdade by Amadeu de Fretas and Premvedi (1950) from Doida de Amor by Antero de Figueiredo. He was also fluent in Konkani. Mr. Raikar began his literary career by contributing short stories to the Marathi monthly, Lokmitra, in 1932. He also contributed to other Marathi magazines such as Parijat, Dhruvam, Chitramaya Jagat, and Kala. His first collection of short stories, Karanjache Tushar, was published in 1939. Other collections of short stories by him include Saptaswar, Bhavana ani Vasana, and Sandhyarajani, the last one being published in late Nineties. His translations introduced Marathi readers to the Latin-Portuguese culture. Mr. Raikar was elected unopposed as the president of the 19th Akhil Gomantak Marathi Sahitya Sammelan held at Pernem in 1990. A year later, he was presented with the honorary fellowship of Gomantak Marathi Academy for his contribution to literature. UNI
