Mangalore
By Our Staff Correspondent
MANGALORE, MAY 27. The Mangalore City Corporation unit of Jam'iyyatul Falah has announced that it would be organising a weeklong education awareness programme, "Shikshana: Ujwala Bhavishyakkagi", here from Friday. The objective of the programme was to create awareness in society about the importance of education and highlight the problem of school dropouts. Abdul Raouf Puthige, president of the unit, told presspersons that there were thousands of children who could not afford education because of poverty. The aim of the campaign was to ensure that such children received help from philanthropists. Mr. Raouf said there were many organisations that were involved in charity work, but very few focussed on education. The organisation would approach known philanthropists and persuade them to sponsor at least one deserving poor student in their neighbourhood. The organisation would carry out an extensive publicity campaign involving a vehicle "jatha" by way of distributing pamphlets and putting up banners at important locations in the city. The publicity material would seek to spread the message of helping poor students continue their education, he said and added that nearly 20,000 pamphlets were distributed across the city. The important part of the campaign would be held on Sunday where nearly 50 volunteers of the organisation, including women, would conduct an education campaign at Adkarapadavu near Konaje. The organisation was running an educational institution there, he said and added that it was the aim of the village to upgrade this institution into a college. The volunteers would conduct a door-to-door survey of households in the village and ascertain the educational needs of students there. They would be informed about the need to educate their children, he said and added that parents would be exhorted to readmit dropouts to school.
