CHENNAI, MAY 27. The first meeting of a permanent committee constituted by the government will be held here tomorrow to consider a plea by an association of unaided medical and paramedical colleges for conducting a common entrance test for admission to management quota seats. As in the case of engineering education, the permanent committee for common entrance examinations for private professional institutions is headed by the retired judge, S.S. Subramani. The committee has been constituted by the government on the basis of a Supreme Court order of August 2003. It comprises S.P Thyagarajan, Madras University Vice-Chancellor; Sushila Raj, a retired Director of Medical Education; V. Venkatasamy, a retired professor from the Stanley Medical College and Sheela Rani Chunkath, Health Secretary (as member secretary). Justice Subramani earlier this month told associations of engineering colleges that it would consider permitting a CET only if all colleges and associations came together. Following this, the Tamil Nadu Private Professional Colleges Association (health sciences) announced the formation of a consortium of private health sciences professional colleges in Tamil Nadu. This, it said, would include two medical colleges, five dental colleges, seven homoeopathy colleges, one Siddha college, three Ayurvedha, two naturopathy and Yogic Science institutions, 33 pharmacy colleges and 25 nursing colleges.
