ONGC downs DLW

COIMBATORE, MAY 27. Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC), Dehradun scored a hard-fought 83-80 win over Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW), Varanasi on day two of the 46th All-India basketball tournament for the Nachimuthu Gounder Cup for men at the VOC Park Corporation sports complex courts here on Thursday.

The first two quarters saw the teams engaged in a tough battle. If Sudhir, Mihir Pandey and Satheesh reached the ring with ease for DLW, so did Nishant, Shabeer, Sridhar and Suresh for ONGC. At the breather the teams were at 37-all.

In the third, DLW went all-out, but with the ONGC men also doubling their efforts the storyline remained the same.

The fourth was one better. Sudhir and Mihir combined well to trouble the ONGC defence. They even managed to come good with a lay-up or two. At this juncture, ONGC's Shabeer, Suresh and Sridhar rose to the occasion and turned the tide in the team's favour at the whistle.

In another match, defending champion Indian Overseas Bank, Chennai, routed Madras Engineering Group, Bangalore, 71-47. IOB was 40-27 up at the lemon break. The second half of the match was just a formality.

In the other matches of the day, Kerala State Electricity Board, Thiruvananthapuram, went down fighting to Artillery Centre, Hyderabad, 70-80, Central Excise, Kochi, cruised to a comfortable 78-50 win over local hope YMCA, Indian Bank, Chennai, downed EME, Bhopal 54-44 and MEG, Bangalore, scored a 100-76 win over Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu, Chennai.

The results:

Men: ONGC, Dehradun bt DLW, Varanasi 83-80; IOB, Chennai bt MEG, Bangalore 71-47; Artillery Centre, Hyderabad bt KSEB, Thiruvananthapuram 80-70; Central Excise, Kochi bt YMCA 78-50; Indian Bank, Chennai bt EME, Bhopal 54-44; MEG, Bangalore bt SDAT, Chennai 100-76.

Women: Southern Railway bt Central Railway 58-33.
