Cuddalore
By Our Special Correspondent
CUDDALORE, MAY 27. Collector Gagandeep Singh Bedi visited Sathipattu on Wednesday to assess the extent of pollution caused by discharge of effluents by a private firm in Panruti block. The visit followed complaints from villagers that the pollution had affected groundwater quality and damaged crops in 80 acres. Speaking to presspersons after inspecting the area, Mr. Bedi said the firm was storing effluents in pits and this had probably overflowed into nearby farms in the recent rain. He said that the Tahsildar, the Agricultural Officer and the Village Administrative Officer had been directed to assess the damage and send a report to him immediately. This would be forwarded to the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board to claim damages from the firm. A show cause notice would also be served on the company demanding as to why action should not be initiated against it.
