Girls outshine boys in Pondicherry

PONDICHERRY, MAY 27. Girls have fared better than boys in the SSLC examinations held in Pondicherry this year.

Out of the 6,887 girls who appeared in the SSLC examinations, 5,418 have passed, recording 78.76 per cent while the boys, recorded a pass percentage of 73.44 per cent. Of the 6,694 boys who wrote the exam, 4,916 have passed.

Announcing the SSLC results at a press conference here today, the Education Minister K Lakshminarayanan said that of the 80 private and 89 government schools in Pondicherry and Karaikal, 32 private schools and only one government school have cent percent pass. While the State average pass percentage in government and private schools put together was 76.09 per cent this year, compared to last year's 78.82 per cent, a decline of about 2 per cent.

The State topper however was a boy, K Senthil Kumar belonging to the Amalorpavam Higher Secondary School with a score of 491 marks. "My parents were with me throughout and encouraged me a lot during my 10th standard. My father, K Venkatakrishnan runs a travels firm and my mother Veerammal is a nurse. Since I have seen my mother work in the hospital from a very young age, I want to become a doctor and so I am going to take the Biology group", he says.

Asked whether he was happy with the marks that he got, he said he had at least expected 495 marks. He had aimed to be State first from the beginning.

The second rank was from Karaikal where C Valliammal of the Nirmala Ranee Girls Higher Secondary School got 490 marks. The third rank was bagged by a student of the Immaculate Heart of Marys High School, Nellithope, M J Dhanabhakyalakshmi with 489 marks.

The girl, who got the fourth rank in the state, M Sangeetha of Immaculate Heart of Mary's Girls higher Secondary School with a total of 488 marks, says that she didn't expect that she would get a state rank.

In the government schools, J Gayathri Jaubin of the Subramania Bharatiar Girls High School with 482 marks secured the first rank, the second rank went to N Karthiarivarasan of Thiru Vi Ka Governmetn High School and R Rajesh with 480 marks. Three students P Revathy, K Prabu and A Anitha who secured 479 marks shared the third rank.

Mr Lakshminarayanan said that of the nine government schools that have secured pass percentage of above 90 per cent 4 in rural areas would receive Rs.1 lakh cash award. A total of 13,581 students appeared for the exams of which 10334 have passed. Last year 12,993 students wrote the exams with only 10,241 passing. He also said that the heads of government schools where marks have gone down this year have been asked to explain the reasons and added that supplementary classes would be conducted for those students who have not passed.

In the Matriculation exam results that were also announced today, 99.19 per cent of the 992 students, who appeared have passed. The State first rank was a shared one this time, with the same total of 1062 marks being bagged by R Bhavana and K Sudarsan of the St Patrick Hr Sec School. The second rank went to the students of the same school, Nishanth and Saurabh Agarwal with 1059 marks. The third rank was secured by Raghav Mohan of the same school with 1058 marks.
