Verdict 2004

Sir, — Verdict 2004 marks the return from the divisive politics of recent years to the broad and all inclusive ethos of the freedom movement represented by the Congress and its allies. This is truly an epoch-making development for which the parties from the south, particularly the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, can take full and deserving credit.

R. Narayanan,
Seattle, U.S.

Sir, — Looking at the scramble among MPs to secure Ministerial berths, one feels their main objective is to serve their ego, not the poor. For any job, past experience is counted. But it seems for the highly responsible post of Cabinet Minister, no experience in Parliament is needed. In fact, some Ministers are yet to contest an election.

G.K.S. Kandasubramanian,
Sivaganga, T.N.

Sir, — The induction of the Rashtriya Janata Dal chief, Laloo Prasad Yadav, and Mohammad Taslimuddin, who have been chargesheeted in criminal cases, in the Ministry reflects poorly on a country that is constantly trying to improve its standing in the international community. Of course, the Congress had no other option but to give in to the demands of the inescapable compulsions of coalition politics.

Sir, — Candidates rejected by their own constituencies have been given the posts of Union Ministers. Is this what democracy means? Or does it show the supremacy of politicians and the political parties over our democracy?

Sir, — A party with only 145 seats is calling the shots. The Left Front with 63 seats has the veto power over any policy.

While the Prime Minister is supposed to have the prerogative of allotting portfolios, we hear of signed agreements on the same. Is this democracy?

R. Rajamani,
Chennai
